Dennis In The Starting Blocks

Tomorrow Dennis starts his journey in earnest with our first full development workshop with the tremendous chaps & chapesses from Simplicity IT. In four month's time we should have a public alpha site that everyone can test to destruction....

For the record and future reference I'd like to note the reasons why we selected Simplicity (apologies if this is a bit dry in comparison with my normal ramblings!)...

First impressions
Right off the bat the MD, John O'Dwyer's phone manner and dialogue was professional and articulate. Follow up emails were prompt and courteous. Questions were clearly expressed and pertinent. This was carried through into our on-site meeting at Simplicity's offices, which are in a quiet but convenient location in Highbury. The office vibe was relaxed but studious. We knew we could work with these people.

Grasp of concept
Either Project Dennis is rather complex or we are not very good at explaining it. In any event, not everyone "gets it" straight away. Some of the developers we spoke to were clearly just going through the motions. Not only did Simplicity take it all on board, their proposal contained descriptions of our objectives that were far better than our own, and there has been a demonstrable enthusiasm to be part of what they see innovative project. John has been the only person to admit to being able to point to the "light-bulb" moment during our discussions.

Reference work
Simplicity have done a bunch of cool websites (or webware apps as they call them), a number of which contain very relevant modules for our own project. This was not immediately obvious from the reference sites listed on their own site, but during demonstrations at their office we were very impressed at the scope and quality of their portfolio.

Overall professionalism
Touched on above already, but the quality of their proposal, which was put together in less than a week and delivered ahead of schedule was excellent. Clear, concise, with an obvious methodology. Following the proposal all questions have been answered by return on what has seemed like a 24-7 basis. Changes to specifications have been accomodated and plans adjusted quickly and without fuss. Simplicity were our clear favourites in advance of receiving the commercials. We feared that they would be easily the most expensive.

Project quote
We were pleasantly surprised to find that their quote for the first phase of the project was broadly in line with others. In fact there was little difference between theirs and the cheapest quote we received (and 1/6th of the most expensive!). A done deal...

Following the link to Simplicity IT (yes, I, too have a web 2.0 project simmering, so Project Dennis is of significant interest to me) I visited on of their featured sites, Common Purpose.

I then Google Common Purpose & discovered http://www.loveforlife.com.au/node/5394, which reports that:

"...On the surface, Common Purpose is an educational charity which does leadership and networking development training.

In reality, Common Purpose or, more properly, Communist Purpose, is a corrupt, subversive, secretive and sinister organisation which seeks to destroy the national identity of Britain and to destroy democracy in Britain..."

Just FYI.

@70s - Thanks, updates soon... :-)

@laog - Thanks for the heads up. Since Project Dennis also aims to take over the world under everyone's noses we hope to appear before too long on the loveforlife.com.au website with a lengthy, dreadfully written conspiracy critique. When we do, we'll know we have arrived ;-)

Thanks for taking an interest... is there any online info on your project?

@70s teen - my guess is that it's bona fide but perhaps their humor is too subtle for me and it's a send-up.

@Som - No info online, no. The 2.0 idea is merely one of a number of cogs that I've been developing and carefully slotting into place for the last couple of years.

It's actually, primarily, a vehicle for my lady, the Mysterious Madame X.

I believe that if/when all seven cogs will be seen in motion, the design will, I hope be admired by the finest Swiss watchmakers, at least. It incorporates:

Life
Lifestyle
Art &
Business

...with everything feeding on my flamboyant understanding of the media, (where I've worked for many years)...and Madame X's business acumen, charm & charisma.

I realize that I'm being deliberately coy but the first cog, which will be presenting solutions for small business, will be launched in Feb/March.

If that succeeds, it will finance the other cogs.

However, the setting up of Dennis is a wonderful experiment for us to ghost for the 2.0 cog, especially in relation to exactly what IT solutions you choose & why (team, software etc.).

A toast to your earnest journey! :-)

@laog - I will watch your cogs turn with great interest. Art & business in particular being two areas of my personal interest. Oh, and life too. And lifestyle. Yep, sounds like you are covering the bases.

We will start to release more info about the project as development gets underway so watch this space, or the ATIA website in the coming weeks. If there is anything more specific you would like to know please feel free to drop an email.

Good luck with your venture too!

@Tango - Thank you for the toast! (does it have marmite on it?)

@som - No specifics are requested presently, simply because I'd rather see Dennis, er, expose himself gradually.

I couldn't help but come back and post this. Orangepeel found another critique of Common Purpose here, which is better written but to be honest still smacks of a bit of conspiracy-stirring. I don't know (or particularly care) whether or not there is anything nefarious going on here but I couldn't help a smile at the closing "call to arms".

If you suspect Common Purpose is active in your organization, or see a pattern of incredibly bad decisions, money being wasted, notice bullying, fraud, or threats, note the names of those involved (we've tracked down over a thousand) and please contact us. And publish the truth about Common Purpose as widely as you can.

Oh no! They're EVERYWHERE!!!
