Some things are destined for the bonfire the moment they were conceived, and so it was with a certain item of furniture (plus a small collection of unwanted flotsam). Just before I dropped the match I noticed that the "Fire Resistant" label had still not been removed and decided to put this claim to the test and record the results. The following photo montage spans no more than four minutes and speaks for itself...
The hot seat.

I hope you remembered to put some hedgehogs under the cushion ..... crikey - quite scary ....
Interesting .. well, it didn't say 'fireproof', did it? LOL!
I'm wondering if it ever got cleaned during its lifetime? Some cleaning agents will destroy any fire-resistant dressing in a fabric, just as they will any waterproofing.
Scary, though, innit?
Are you totting around the Kent countryside looking for things to burn? Have you downsized to a horse and cart?
Help! Can't get past anonymous. Knew I had become invisible. One does with age, you know! Be warned!
Really like the verification word - somehow apt!
@nursey - I will, I'm sure the maker's name was printed on the bottom. I'll sift through the ash.
@DP - I've gone off roast hedgehogs.
@Jay - By the state of it it went through its entire life in a cleaning agent exclusion zone.
@anonymous - No need. People keep bringing things here for me to look after.
Downsizing is coming soon to a post near you, and don't worry about anonymity, I swear by it.
holey moley that is pretty spectacular & a tad worrying ... maybe maufacturers should teach the sofas to read the labels!!
[it's been a long week!!]
@70s - I was quite shocked at the ferocity and the heat... off to buy an extinguisher this weekend :-)
"...I love the smell of napalm in the morning...it [smells] like Victory..."
(and hedgehogs, no doubt).
I see that getting rid of the monster truck Somnam mothership will not reduce your carbon footprint... Are you buying emission certificates? If you can find a bank that trades them (!) I think you could take up those which were originally destined for Cameroon and Vietnam and not be overhedged....
Seriously, the fumes coming off that fire are probably more toxic than all of the assets on my FMSIIB's balance sheet. And that's saying something!
Word verif fronimpi. A lesser known relative of the scampi, which carries a bit of weight around the hips. It could be renamed the udhimpi on that note....
@laog - It's a delicacy around here, you know.
@UDH Ecoboy - I think you are getting confused about current enviro-mentalist trends. I am willing to acknowledge that deforestation through burning is probably a bad thing.
Defurnitation through burning, however, is to be actively encouraged. Especially when said furniture contains its own micro-ecosystem supported by fossilized fragments of Fanny Craddock's first TV recipes.
p.s. Stay away from Carbon Emissions trading. There was a major market shift some years ago when everyone was the wrong way round, which demonstrates that they are far too volatile a product to trade in the future, and it will probably never take off anyway.
Stick to something much more safe and secure that has a long-term future, such as structured CDOs.
